Gunshot Wounds: Assessment & Treatment

This unique session blends forensic science and restorative art to tackle one of the most challenging aspects of funeral service.  Each year, approximately 45,000 deaths in the U.S. result from gunshot injuries, and this case-based session gives embalmers practical techniques for treating wounds from handguns, shotguns, and rifles—improving outcomes for families facing these tragic circumstances. Discussion will be had on differentiating gunshot wounds based on distance including entry and exit wounds, as well as contact, close range, and intermediate distance wounds. Treatment methods will include restorative art techniques based on type of firearm used as well as addressing powder burns, soft tissue damage, and skeletal trauma caused by gunfire.
